Description

Reporting to the Director of Justice, the North Sectorial Courtworker position is responsible for assisting aboriginal youth and adults charged with an offence and youth alleged to have committed an offence before the Criminal Court to receive fair, just, equitable and culturally sensitive treatment.  This position exists to provide Aboriginal accused, at the earliest possible stage and all stages of the criminal justice process, with timely and accurate information about the nature of their charge and consequences, their rights and responsibilities, options including alternative justice processes if available and appropriate referral to legal and community resources.  
    Attend court (Provincial Adult Court/Youth Court) and ensure that all clients that are eligible for alternatives to court process are referred to the program
    Out of court on behalf of accused (accused family, spouse etc.)
    Interview clients who are in need of assistance and determine their needs
    Diversion adult, youth, family  providing alternative measures options
    Liaise with the Justice Personnel (police, Crown, Legal Aide and other Courtworkers)
    Conduct presentations, meetings with communities, schools and aboriginal groups to share information relating to programming and to ensure community commitment to community development for future Justice and crime prevention programming
    Perform work on Reserve
    Prepare and making referrals  legal information, referral to service agency
    Case preparation  reporting to Database
    Gather and submitting all necessary documents for the purpose of statistical analysis
    Keep records of offenders referred to the program as required by funding agencies
    Train for self-study, research, supervisor contact
