Description

The Limnology Laboratory at the University of Regina is seeking a qualified research manager. The successful applicant will provide leadership in the QuAppelle Valley Long-Term Ecological Research (QU-LTER) program, now entering its third decade. QU-LTER is a multi-disciplinary effort to quantify the effects of land use, urbanization, and climate change on the aquatic ecosystems of the northern Great Plains. The Limnology Laboratory is a member of the Institute of Environmental Change and Society (IECS), a research centre dedicated to improving our understanding of the interactions between human society and the biophysical world.

Responsibilities of the position include: personnel management, including hiring, training and supervising of diverse assistants; facilitating research by graduate and undergraduate students; organizing, conducting and leading field research in a team setting; chemical and biological analysis of environmental samples in a laboratory setting; logistics and sample management, and; information and data management and analysis.

The ideal candidate will have experience in aquatic research in field and laboratory settings. Demonstrated leadership experience is strongly preferred. Applicant must possess a valid drivers license, be comfortable working on open water from small boats under adverse weather conditions. Managing and scheduling a crew of 4-6 people to sample multiple locations and perform laboratory duties, on a daily basis throughout the field season, is a requirement of the position. Experience with analytical laboratory procedures and database analysis (Access) are an asset. Routine laboratory analyses include high performance liquid chromatography, spectrophotometry, biological/enzymatic assays, chemical determinations, and stable isotope procedures. Training will be provided for all aspects of the position, as needed.
