Desired Qualifications:
- Education Assistant certification or early childhood training
- Successful experiences working with children
- Certification in Non Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)
- Certification or training in Control Theory
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a school team are critical
- Significant knowledge of community and children's developmental needs
- Willingness to attend to a broad range of issues, including student personal care
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
- Ability to work with individuals (parents, teachers, administrators, specialists) and agencies to most effectively support special needs students
Duties (may include but are not limited to):
- Working with behaviourally challenged students
- Willingness to aid in the delivery of program components developed by the classroom or Student Services Teacher
- Conduct oneself in a manner appropriate to an educational institution that provides services to children
- Deal tactfully with staff, students, parents and the public
- Be knowledgeable, supportive and follow applicable Board policies
- Under the direct supervision of a teacher, supervise learning activities
- Based on the needs of individual students, provide designated students with assistance in dressing, eating, toileting and transportation
- Under the direct supervision of a teacher, assist assigned students with reading, speech, assignments, tests and comprehension of presented curriculum based on the student's Personal Program Plan
- Perform such other duties and tasks as may be required due to the specialized nature of a student's particular education program
