Description

The Family Support worker is responsible for all aspects of the childrens program at YWCA Reginas Isabel Johnson Shelter and My Aunts Place shelter and reports directly to the Managers of both of these shelters.  The Family Support Worker acts as an advocate for the children while maintaining a gentle and diplomatic approach with their mothers, and divides her time between the two shelter locations.  

Duties include (but are not limited to) providing information, referrals and parenting support to mothers; spending time with the children to informally educate on topics like violence, trauma, or living in a shelter; providing short periods of childcare for mothers; planning and delivering activities for children and families; and participating in cooperative case planning with both shelter teams.

Skills and Qualifications

Minimum level of education is 2 years post-secondary education in a related field plus one year of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
must hold a class 5 drivers license and provide a satisfactory criminal record check, including a vulnerable sector check.
Knowledge/professional experience regarding domestic violence and the impact on children who have been exposed to violence;complex issues related to homelessness, poverty, addiction, etc and the impact on children; childhood development; gentle, positive approaches to parenting; the Child and Family Services Act; case planning; accurate record keeping and basic computer skills
