The YWCA Isabel Johnson Shelter provides safe and secure emergency shelter for women and their children fleeing abusive relationships. It is a 10-bed Shelter staffed 24 hours a day. The Shelter works towards the elimination of violence against women and children by providing safe shelter, empowerment, support, education and awareness of alternatives to violence.
We are seeking a permanent Shelter Worker for nights and evenings on both weekdays and weekends. This position is approximately 30 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
-Conduct intake and departure procedures for each woman
-Provide information, education, and counseling to the women as needed
-Provide referrals and advocacy to ensure women have necessary supports in the community
-Respond to calls on the crisis line
-Maintain records, including client files and daily log
-Assist with the physical operation of the shelter, including meal plans, cleaning rooms, and hauling donations of clothing and household items.
-Assist with transportation as appropriate
-Provide support for YWCA residents in the absence of a Resident worker
-Carry out some administrative functions and assist with Shelter maintenance.
-Maintain an orderly and comfortable environment within the Shelter.
-Assist women with children's needs when appropriate.
Requirements/Qualifications:
-Minimum requirement for Shelter worker is a post-secondary certificate in a related field plus one year of relevant experience or equivalent qualifications.
-Respect for women and children of various backgrounds.
-Effective written and oral communication skills.
-Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
-Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
-Valid drivers license.
-Criminal record check including vulnerable sector check;
-Current First Aid/CPR certification.
