Qualifications
A degree, diploma or equivalent education and work experience in Museology, Curatorial Studies, or a related field. Specialization in Saskatchewan history or Western Canadian History an asset. Experience with non-profits, grant writing, and facility management an asset. Must be able to work independently and be self-motivated.
Museum Description
The Souris Valley Museum provides local residents and visitors with a depiction of the social, cultural and economic development of Estevan and area. The Museum's collection comprises of approximately 4000 objects. It operates as a seasonal facility that offers public and school tours, day camps, special events and hands-on workshops from Victoria Day to Labour Day. It employs, in addition to the curator, a permanent part-time administrator and hires 4 full-time summer programming staff.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Souris Valley Museum Board of Directors, the Curator works as a full-time employee, who oversees and facilitates programming through the summer months at the Museum and works on collection management, grant writing and outreach projects at an off-site office for the rest of the year.
Specific Duties
-Participates in the planning and coordinating of all aspects of development, operation, policies, security and maintenance of the Museum.
-Develops and oversees staff requirements and personnel for the Museum (seasonal).
-Initiates, organizes and supervises the installation of exhibits.
-Prepares publicity for exhibits and other Museum events and programs.
-Ensures that collections are properly researched, documented and catalogued and the established requirements for handling and storage of artifacts are followed.
-Establishes and implements annual budget.
-Researches public and private funding opportunities and prepares grant applications with the aid of the administrator.
