This individual will undertake research project activities related to the application of remote sensing technologies (particularly LIDAR and other remotely sensed data sources) for the development of forest inventories. In addition, the Remote Sensing Specialist will explore and make recommendations regarding potential remote sensing opportunities that are well aligned with SRCs various areas of expertise. This is an 8 month term position.
Accountabilities
Utilize existing LIDAR data to conduct quantitative interpretation of data for forest inventory
Compare use of LIDAR to various aerial imagery options (Satellite, Orthophoto, UAV) for the development of forest inventories
Compare relative accuracies of forest inventories with various LIDAR data (# of returns)
Explore opportunities and advantages of using LIDAR data in combination with imagery, to develop forest inventories
Develop a remote sensing development plan by exploring potential applications and making recommendations
Qualifications
Masters degree related to remote sensing, with a specific focus on LIDAR applications
Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience working in the application of LIDAR data
Specific experience in applying LIDAR data in forest ecology applications (specific forest inventory experience is an asset)
Experience working with large area landscapes and big data analysis
Experience in vegetation classification methodologies, including machine learning and data mining applications
Experience in combining and integrating various remote sensing data (e.g., LIDAR, PHODAR, Landsat, etc.)
