Reporting directly to the Community Health Nursing Supervisor, the LACTATION SUPPORT NURSE will educate women, families, health professionals, and the community about breastfeeding. The Lactation Support Nurse acts as an advocate for breastfeeding as the infant feeding norm and provides holistic culturally sensitive evidence-based breastfeeding support for women and their families from preconception to weaning.
Position Qualifications and Skills
* Bachelor of Science in Nursing
* Minimum 3 years experience in community health nursing
* Registration in good standing with the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association
* Requirement is to achieve certification as a Registered Lactation Consultant
* Must possess knowledge, skills and professional judgement as it relates to health education, health promotion, prevention and screening; refer as necessary
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diverse cultural, physical, emotional and psychological response to birthing, lactation and parenting
* Knowledge of and sensitivity to the First Nations language, culture and traditions; knowledge of Plains Cree Language is a definite asset
* Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
* Previous work experience with First Nations communities
* Demonstrate an understanding of the health and social issues facing First Nations people
* Must be able to work as an effective team member and to work independently, in a self- motivated manner.
* Must be computer literate
* Must possess organizational skills
* Must possess a valid drivers license
* Must provide a clear criminal record check
