Background: SEARCH (Student Energy in Action in Regina for Community Health Inc.) is a non-profit student run, interdisciplinary primary health care initiative situated in the North Central community of Regina. Each week, student volunteers from various post secondary institutions dedicate their time to work under the guidance of trained professional mentors in order to provide clinical services and social programs to the community of North Central. SEARCH is currently seeking an individual to fulfill its First Nations Cultural Support Worker role.
Qualifications:
-Completion of a post secondary program (i.e., social work, nursing, education) with appropriate professional liability insurance.
-Ability to pass a Criminal Records Check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
-Ability to foster a positive learning environment in a diverse workplace, while providing cultural support and guidance to clients, staff, and volunteers.
-Extensive knowledge of Aboriginal culture and traditions.
Duties:
-Provides informal counselling and services to clients during SEARCH shifts.
-Provide guidance to mentors and student volunteers pertaining to specific Aboriginal issues.
-Assists in educating SEARCH staff on First Nations health practices, traditions, and referrals to other agencies
-Accesses Aboriginal cultural spokespeople including Elders to participate in educational programs and workshops in conjunction with SEARCH Executive Director.
-Leading cultural activities that will take place at SEARCH including, but not limited to, beading, smudging, praying, oral storytelling, drumming, crafts, dancing, etc.
Working Conditions:
-This is a casual position of 4 hours once per month. These will be spent at the SEARCH shift. Clinic hours: Saturday afternoons from September to April 12:00-4:00 PM; Monday evenings from May to August 5:00-9:00 PM.
