The Residence Custodian is an in-scope position reporting the Campus Manager or designate. The incumbent is primarily responsible for the security, cleaning, and minor maintenance at the student residence with a view to protecting people and property, and ensuring a secure and comfortable living environment for students. The Residence Custodian has a range of duties and responsibilities including, but not limited to: conducting security rounds to ensure the safety of students and property; report disturbances to appropriate authority; assigning rooms and explaining College rules and regulations to new students; enforcing residence rules and procedures for student residence users; disposing of garbage; cleaning all common areas in the residence including bathrooms, kitchens, hallways, stairwells (dust, vacuum, wash walls, windows, floors), cleaning bedrooms when tenants vacate; undertaking ground maintenance as required (shoveling snow from walks, cleaning yard); and reporting residence maintenance problems and student issues to the Campus Manager.
The minimum qualifications for this position are: a Grade 12 or equivalent; WHIMIS training; knowledge of fire hazards and initial fire suppression techniques; good interpersonal communication skills and the ability to follow written instructions; proven ability to work with minimal supervision and knowledge of sanitation principles, cleaning equipment operations (washing machines, vacuum cleaners) and cleaning chemical usage; and must be willing to work regulated hours which may include shift work. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
