Position Description:
Under the direction of the Nursery Manager or designate, to operate and perform basic routine maintenance of irrigation and greenhouse climate control equipment as required, to implement cultural schedules, to assist growers in crop monitoring, including moisture, disease, insects, and crop measurements, and to carry out other related duties as required. When weather conditions do not require irrigation, general nursery work will be performed.
These activities will involve responsibility for proper operation of equipment, some basic facility maintenance and repairs, completion of activity related records, and the performance of other related duties.
Shift length and start times will vary to meet crop and operational requirements. Weekend work will also be required.
Qualifications:
1. Education and Specialized Knowledge:
This position requires some general knowledge about plants and plant production in artificial growing media in greenhouses and knowledge of nursery safety issues. Some years of related post secondary education would be desirable. Applicants for this position are required to hold a valid class 5 driverss license and be capable of obtaining a pesticide applicatorss certificate within 3 months of starting in this position.
2. Experience:
Employees in this position should have experience and a good working knowledge of nursery operational procedures, record keeping systems and basic maintenance of irrigation equipment.
3. Required Abilities:
Ability to follow instructions, co-ordinate and communicate with others and take responsibility in assigned tasks; ability to use hand and power tools, as well as other equipment associated with irrigation operation and basic maintenance; ability to produce neat and accurate records; physically capable of performing heavy manual work out of doors, in all weather conditions.
