Description

Terms of Employment: Full-time permanent
Wage/Salary: $85,000 - $93,000 CAD, dependent upon qualifications; annual bonus potential up to one months salary; company vehicle (taxable benefit); up to $2,000 CAD for relocation costs if required

Job Duties:
Assist in the development of strategies to breed new varieties of wheat and other cereals for Western Canada.
Assist in leading the cereals breeding team
Analyze all data with tools and propose breeding decisions with the senior breeder.
Use molecular markers, doubled haploids, and other modern technologies in breeding.
Travel in-country and abroad to participate in wheat breeding activities and meetings is necessary.
Work Experience:
4+ years of experience as a plant breeder of wheat or other small grains is required
Strong knowledge in breeding, genetics, agronomy, and application of modern technologies for improvement of cereals is necessary.
Advanced knowledge in the statistical design, data management and analysis of complex phenotypic and genotypic data sets is required including a working knowledge of the R environment for statistical computing.
Experience in characterizing genetic variation and breeding for pest resistance in wheat is required.
Experience breeding wheat in the spring wheat region of North America is desired.
Knowledge of cereal chemistry principles and their application to breeding and marketing would be advantageous.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills are needed.
Leadership skills and experience in managing people and programs are desired.
Education Required: PhD, in Plant Breeding and Genetics is required.
