Description

Primary Purpose: To provide support for leading edge research in structural/materials engineering.  To work with faculty members and technicians, and to supervise undergraduate students, graduate students and others in various hands-on laboratory, tutorials, teaching and research activities.

Nature of Work: The nature of the work is to provide technical expertise and management of all laboratory systems, with particular focus on electronics, data acquisition, computer programming and testing.  This includes the operation of all test equipment and apparatus used in undergraduate, research and contract work within each laboratory in Civil, Geological, and Environmental Engineering, with focus being on the Structure/Materials Lab.  A large part of this work is devoted to providing oversight and management of the laboratories.  This includes supervising other employees working within the labs, as well as students, which means providing them with a work schedule and various tasks for them to complete and then report back to this position.  This position also has primary responsibility for equipment in the laboratories.  This includes not only operation, maintenance and repair, but also coordinating with suppliers for new purchases, upgrades and service. There is a large amount of fabrication involved with this job, which requires proficiency in operating hand tools, power tools and electronic devices.
