Description

We are seeking a permanent, Shelter Worker for predominately nights and evenings on both weekdays and weekends. This position is approximately 32 hours per week.

Under the supervision of the Manager and Director of Womens Housing, the IJS Support Worker has three primary responsibilities:  
Provide practical support to women and children fleeing domestic violence,
Work in cooperation with the shelter team to create and monitor strength based individualized plans for each    
  resident to meet her goals and needs,
Ensure smooth operations of the shelter.  

Service Delivery

Provide inclusive, client-centered services to the women and children from a trauma-informed perspective.
Maintain a safe and comfortable atmosphere.
Assist with shelter programming;
Maintain detailed and accurate case files;
Provide backup support for YWCA residents as needed.
Participate in professional development opportunities.
Participate in public education in the community as needed.

Qualifications:

The minimum requirement is a post-secondary degree or certificate in a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

The Support Worker must hold a class 5 drivers license, provide a satisfactory criminal record check, including a vulnerable sector check and an advanced security check, and have a valid CPR/First Aid certification. The position requires the ability to do shiftwork, and lift/carry laundry, personal belongings, groceries, garbage and other items.

Ideally the candidate will have demonstrated understanding of/experience with:
the complex issues of domestic violence including addictions, mental wellness, poverty, and homelessness
responding to crisis situations
good communication skills
accurate record keeping and basic computer skills
respect for cultural diversity and familiarity with issues affecting marginalized people.
