The job of the Medical Office Assistant (MOA) is primarily to function as the doctors secretary. He/she must be able to answer the phone, book and cancel appointments, greet patients and update their information before placing them in a room, use a computer, sort and scan any necessary documents, and to make phone calls and faxes on behalf of the doctor, in addition to helping to make and manage the doctors schedule and appointments. His/her function also includes acting as an assistant on occasions where the doctor needs one for a procedure with a patient (e.g. to hand and take objects from the doctor during a Pap exam) as well as to do basic measurements on patients such as measuring their height, weight, and blood pressure prior to a visit. He or she may also be asked to do basic tests such as to do urine analysis or to perform a urine pregnancy test on a sample from a patient. A good MOA also acts as an mini-office manager, for example, keeping track of the supplies that the doctor needs and re-ordering them on a timely basis. An excellent MOA will also help the doctor with invoices and billing. Essentially, the function of an MOA is to run all the parts of the doctors office, allowing the physician to concentrate on seeing, evaluating, and treating patients. The more efficient the MOA, the more efficient the physician, and the higher the pay will be for the MOA. Previous training/experience as an MOA is not necessary (though it may be desirable) as the MOA will be trained in any of the skills they need. The primary requirements are to be organized, open and willing to learn new things, and to have good teamwork and communication skills.
