The Guidance Counsellor provides support for Grades 6-12 students as they navigate their academic, social emotional and spiritual pathways to fulfilling their goals in education, employment and community service.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and implement individualized educational and career guidance plans
Implement and oversee a school guidance program that provides students with a safe and non-judgmental way to voice their concerns or worries
Analyze student performance in the classroom to provide guidance and identify potential problems
Help students develop academic plans in accordance with their gifts, skills, talents and strengths
Facilitate crisis intervention and prevention programs
Communicate with teachers, parents and administrators on an ongoing basis about behavioral and academic problems
An understanding of best practice in Guidance Counselling, especially for First Nations children and youth
Highly organized, confidential and sensitive to community, school and student data and information
Ability to organize and manage a variety of tasks, including emerging and time sensitive tasks
Ability to foster genuine trusting relationships with students, staff, families and communities
Mutual respect by affirming and empowering others to work in the best interests of all students
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors degree or an equivalent experience preferred; Masters degree from an accredited program (Social Work, Education, Human Justice or related field) is an asset.
1-2 years experience, specific experience in First Nations, with First Nations children, youth and families as a guidance counselor or teacher
Basic knowledge of Canadian First Nations education, federal education systems and treaty rights to education
Integrity and professionalism
Ability to operate within a wide range of student personalities and backgrounds
