A) EDUCATION:
-Successful completion of recognized Dental Assisting course and/or Saskatchewan Dental Association-approved Orthodontic module
-Continuing education: the dental assistant is responsible to maintain continued competence, theoretical knowledge and awareness of technological advancements through education programs, professional literature and group discussions
-Current Level C CPR course
-Valid certificate of Registration with the Saskatchewan Dental Association.
-Formal WHMIS training.
B) POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
-Familiar with Dentrix software
-Prepare and arrange instruments, equipment, and required materials for each treatment.
-Prepare patients for the services they are about to receive and instruct them on post-treatment and recommended oral hygiene.
-Perform intra-oral duties and assist the dentist throughout the procedures including handing him the instruments and keeping the patients mouth free of debris. Orthodontics: of separators, removal and ligation of arch wires, elimination of sharp wires and re-attachment of loose braces
-Promptly follow all instructions from the dentist with all procedures and in dealing with the comfort of the patient.
-Perform laboratory procedures as required.
-Prepare dental materials: cement, amalgam, composite, impression materials, etc.
-Maintain the instruments and working areas in strict accordance with sterilization/disinfection guidelines.
-Take dental radiographs and process them for the dentist as well as maintain the x-ray machinery.
-Take inventory of all supplies, instruments, and medications and order or restock items as required. Orthodontic Assistants order orthodontic consumables.
-Orthodontic Dental Assistants order Invisalign and prepare pre-treatment records.
