Subject to The Legal Aid Act and The Legal Aid Regulations, and the Code of Professional Conduct of the Law Society of Saskatchewan (all as amended from time to time), provides and is fully responsible for legal services to eligible clients where the matter is considered by the lawyer to have professional merit.
Legal Services exclude fee generating matters, however include (as defined in The Legal Aid Regulations):
interviewing applicants/clients to determine financial, range of service and professional merit eligibility, to assess the legal problem, to gather information, to determine with the client the range of options available to the client, and to make recommendations as to the most viable options
representing a client in Provincial and superior courts
preparing documents, briefs and pleadings
employing non-legal expertise
interviewing witnesses
mediating between a client and opposing party, providing general legal advice and information.
Responsible for the conduct, supervision and coordination of support staff and other legal personnel.
Researches legal issues.
Maintains a state of competence on a continuing basis in all areas which the lawyer practices, including maintenance and improvement of knowledge and skills.
Maintains familiarity with the commissions policies and procedures.
