Under the supervision of the Health Director and the direction of the COHI Dental Therapist, the COHI Aide is responsible for administration and reporting duties, program management, and taking an active role in promoting COHI to help the children establish and maintain healthy teeth and gums. Prior to performing COHI services, the COHI Aide will be required to successfully complete COHI training. Recertification of COHI training will be completed annually. There are target objectives that have been identified across Canada for the Childrens Oral Health Initiative (COHI). The target percentages that need to be reached by the COHI Aide are as follows:
COHI Authorization to 40% of the eligible 0-4 years old and to 70% of the eligible 5-7 years old population.
All required Fluoride Varnish Applications to 70% of the 0-4 and 5-7 years old population with authorization.
Act as a link between the dental professional and the community.
Collect appropriately completed authorization forms for COHI services.
Collect verbal or written medical history updates for children enrolled in COHI.
Make home visits in the community.
Complete, update, and maintain forms/records for COHI in an appropriate and confidential manner.
Apply fluoride varnish to the children in the community.
Train the parents and caregivers in basic oral hygiene methods for themselves and children in their care.
Schedule and deliver COHI services in a timely manner.
Arrange clinics for children aged 0 to 7 for the COHI Dental Therapist as required.
Assist in arranging presentations to individuals and groups such as daycare operators, pregnant women, parents/caregivers, Headstart children, and others as required.
