Ghost Transportation Services is looking for a Fleet Operations Manager. This position is based in Saskatoon. What is a Fleet Operations Manager? You are in charge of the trucks. You have to look after every aspect. Are they doing the freight they need to be doing? Is everything running efficiently? Are drivers making money? Are the trucks running properly and being maintained the right way so they are not breaking down on the road? Do we have enough trailers and the proper amount? You have to dispatch when staff is on holiday, away sick, at a seminar. And you have to make sure it is profitable. You are the one that is responsible for the operation.
So what do we need?
You have to lead and manage staff. Both drivers and dispatchers. Hire, train, mentor, develop, discipline and if need be fire.
You need to be able to jump in and do the work yourself as well. Dispatch drivers, talk to customers, cover off all aspects of the asset operation.
While you dont need to be able to rebuild an engine using a pocket knife and a piece of gum, you do need to be able to ask questions, talk to those that can trouble shoot and make good maintenance decisions.
You have to figure out processes, appreciate their need and know when to go outside of them, and take the heat for doing so. You also have to question the process and see if it can be made better.
And computer skills are necessary. It is 2023, but wow, there are still a lot of people who dont know how email works or cant remember their password.
