Reporting to the Mental Health Director, the Addictions Counselor will be responsible for providing first contact and intake services to individuals and youth affected by substance abuse. This includes screening and assessment, delivering informative, dynamic group workshops, developing community awareness and involvement and case and file management.
The Addictions Counselor will be working collaboratively with other professionals and community groups to provide comprehensive services to a specific client population.
Key Duties and Responsibilities may include:
- Assess clients and develop client centered treatment plans
- Counsel clients in need of addictions treatment
- Design and implement relapse prevention programming
- Create substance abuse awareness initiatives in community
- Complete addiction treatment applications with clients
- Respond to clients with cultural responsiveness
- Advocate for needs of clients
- Provide family and social support
- Facilitate group addiction sessions for the community
- Refer clients to appropriate mental health support
- Liaison with treatment centers and community-based resources
- Provide post treatment aftercare based on client needs
- Provide outreach and program development
Skills and Qualifications:
- Minimum of one year experience in addictions/mental health at the community or inpatient level
- Chemical Dependency Diploma preferred
- Demonstrate sobriety and to abstain from the use of alcohol, and/or abuse of drugs, and/or gambling
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, mediation and negotiation skills, good problem solving and conflict resolution skills
-Knowledge of harm reduction programs
-Certification from an accredited organization such as Canadian Certified Addictions Counselor or Certified Addictions Counselor I or II designation would be an asset.
