The Ministry of Highways, Southern Operations is seeking a candidate for the Labour Service Seasonal position as Supervisor of Ferry Operations at the Riverhurst Ferry, Moose Jaw District. As Supervisor, you will operate and supervise the Riverhurst Ferry crossing and passengers. You will supervise staff, assist in training new staff, and schedule work shifts.
You will operate and supervise a large cable ferry transporting vehicles, farm machinery, semis, and passengers across Lake Diefenbaker. Duties include washing, fueling, oil changes, greasing, sanding, painting, and servicing the ferry, as well as maintaining the grounds and buildings. Eleven ferry operators will report directly to you. You will create work schedules supporting 24/7 operations, adjusting for mechanical issues, water flows, or environmental conditions. You will monitor water flows and determine maximum allowable weights, updating signage accordingly for weight limits or closures.
You will supervise and participate in the spring ferry launch and end-of-season dry docking. You will compile a list of supplies, tools, and parts needed for the next season. You will communicate with the Ministry of Highways District Office in Moose Jaw regarding operational interruptions, weight changes, and other issues, and with the Repair Depot for planned or emergency repairs.
You'll submit biweekly timesheets and daily crew hours. Traffic Data Sheets will track vehicle types, passengers, and daily crossings. You must be able to work shifts, all days of the week, and often alone. Good physical condition is required due to heavy lifting & working in adverse weather and environmental conditions.
This is a seasonal position, approximately April 1 - December 31. The employee must report to work on the east side of Lake Diefenbaker where the ferry office is located.
