The cook is responsible for planning menus, grocery shopping, and providing nutritious meals and snacks that adhere to the Canada Food Guide. The cook ensures the meals and snacks are prepared and served according to the ages and developmental levels of the children. Responsibilities include cleaning and housekeeping to ensure and maintain a clean and sanitary environment for food preparation and eating. The cook is responsible for conducting appropriate practices accordingly to the Child Care Regulations and our Centre policies and procedures.
The Cook is under the supervision of the Director and/or Assistant/Supervisor.
Qualifications:
Early Childhood Education level 1 or equivalent post secondary training is preferred, but is not mandatory
Experience with preparing and serving food for children in an early learning environment is preferred, but not mandatory
Food Safe Handling Certificate (may be asked to refresh their certificate every 5 years)
Certification in First Aid and CPR
Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (must be completed every 3 years)
Knowledge and understanding of the Canada Food Guide
Knowledge of the Child Care Regulations, especially relevant to nutrition, meals etc. (copy is kept accessible kitchen)
Understanding of safe food handling practices, proper storage, and food safety regulations
Basic cooking skills with the ability to prepare a variety of healthy and appealing meals for children
Ability to adapt recipes to accommodate children with allergies, intolerances, and special dietary needs
Efficiently manage kitchen tasks and maintain a clean and organized workspace
Confidence in regularly using kitchen appliances, equipment, and cleaners/detergents
Capability to multi-task-juggle several tasks and situations simultaneously
Professionally and effectively communicate with staff and parents regarding dietary needs and meal plans
Relates well with children
