As an important member of an interdisciplinary team, the Addiction Counsellor is primarily responsible for establishing therapeutic relationships with clients. Through sound knowledge of addiction counselling, the assessment processes and techniques, the Addiction Counsellor will have the opportunity to implement therapeutic strategies to ensure appropriate treatment planning.
The incumbent must be a positive role model for youth and have values that include integrity, respect and service excellence. An understanding of youth development, and the creative ability to foster positive youth development, is desirable.
Diverse professions, cultures and healing practices are encouraged within the clinical services offered at Valley Hill. A collaborative, team-focussed approach is maintained with all members of the interdisciplinary team including the Executive Director, Clinical Supervisor, and other members of the Valley Hill staff. In addition, the Addiction Counsellor is responsible for developing and maintaining positive working relationships with care providers, human service agencies and other organizations and within the clients home community.
Qualifications & Core Competencies
A two-year diploma in Addictions Counselling or
Bachelor of Social Work, Indigenous Social Work, or degree in similar field
Awareness of Indigenous culture and history. Comprehensive understanding of current and historical issues. Knowledge of trauma informed care
Understanding of current youth treatment strategies
Knowledge of adolescent development and clinical experience working with youth
Knowledge & experience with case planning and case management including the development of Individual Service Plans
Knowledge and experience administering addictions screening and assessment tools
Ability to maintain clinical documentation, such as written assessments and progress notes, and analyze outcome measures to improve clinical intervention
