Providing direct support to individuals, focusing on their holistic well-being, guided by their unique needs and preferences, is vital. A key component in this role is the implementation of individualized and least restrictive behavior support strategies. During times of behavioural escalations, a calm approach while assessing and evaluating the situation for any immediate risks to the individual or others is necessary for successful outcomes. Effective communication is essential: using clear and simple language, active listening, and avoiding confrontation. You will apply de-escalation techniques, maintaining a neutral demeanor, offering choices to give the individual a sense of self-determination, and may use distraction to redirect their focus.
Typically, the level of knowledge and skills for this position is obtained through 2-3 years post-secondary education in a related human service field, such as Disability Support Worker, Psychology, or Social Work, and/or gained through related experience working in a therapeutic capacity with people with intellectual disabilities who may display complex and challenging behaviours.
