Description
Heavy equipment operators are responsible for operating many different types of heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges. This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. This position reports to and works under the guidance of the Foreman.
Duties and Responsibilities
    Works under the direction of the foreman, to complete daily schedule of work
    Performs daily safety and maintenance checks
    Clean equipment as scheduled and/or required
    Ensure equipment is safely and securely stored
    Advise Foreman of any required maintenance or repairs
    Participate in routine maintenance
    Practice workplace safety to ensure the safety of fellow employees and public.
Required Skills & Qualities
    Experience with culvert installations
    5 + years experience in the operation of heavy equipment in a high traffic environment
    Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures including but not limited to
    backing up procedures, use of flagmen and spotters, signage, incident reporting, required
    personal safety equipment and lifting of heavy loads.
    Knowledge of equipment operation, cleaning and maintenance requirements
    Analytical and problem solving skills
    Effective communication skills (both listening and verbal)
Working Conditions
    Must work in all weather conditions and be prepared for both extreme heat and cold
    Physically strenuous and demanding
    Must be able to work independently and maintain a schedule of work.

The equipment operator must deal with residents and members of the public in a courteous and
respectful manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels and quality of
service. The equipment operator must make note of and report on any such complaints and respond
in a courteous and respectful manner.

Those possessing a Class 1A drivers license certificate in Heavy Equipment Operating will be given preference.
