Description

The Assistant Librarian supports a wide variety of public library services to the community under the direction of the Branch Librarian. They are knowledgeable on library policies and procedures and work with minimal supervision. Accuracy is essential and the employee must be able to exercise independent judgement, use their initiative and work cooperatively with others.

DUTIES
Assist with the efficient operation of the library as established in the Wapiti Branch Manual including: manual and automated circulation, reference and interlibrary loan services, overdue procedures, mail and supervision of staff.
Assist with accuracy in sorting, shelving and shelf-reading library materials.
Assist patrons as needed, including creating library accounts, locating materials, cash-handling and troubleshooting minor account-related issues.
Actively promote the library through regular contact with local schools, community groups and councils.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
Completion of grade 12 or equivalent.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Computer literate, including familiarity with the Windows operating system, email, Microsoft Word and Excel.
Ability to work well without supervision, including working cooperatively and flexing between duties as required.
Punctuality, attendance and adhering to a schedule within the library operating hours.
Present a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check prior to being offered a position.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA
An interest in reading.
Previous experience within a library setting.
Willing to lead and participate in library programming.
Social media experience.

DURATION
Part-time/Casual, on-call basis, employed at irregular intervals.
