Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The primary purpose of a scrap metal yard worker is to safely and efficiently handle, sort, and process various types of metal materials for recycling and resale. This role ensures that incoming scrap is inspected, categorized, and prepared according to quality and safety standards, contributing to environmental sustainability and operational productivity. By maintaining a clean, organized work area and operating equipment responsibly, the Scrap Metal Worker supports the yards overall goal of maximizing material value while minimizing waste and safety hazards.
Sort and process scrap materials, ensuring efficient operation of the scrap yard.
Operate heavy machinery for material handling and ensure safety protocols are followed.
Engage in manual labor such as sorting scrap metal, using cutting torches, and hydraulic power tools.
Adhering to safety protocols and wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Adhere to environmental regulations and maintain equipment.
Comfortable working in physically demanding, outdoor environments.
Assist with weighing, bundling, and stacking materials for shipment.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements
High school graduation certificate or equivalent.
Previous experience in scrap metal recycling, warehouse work, or general labour is an asset (training provided).
Forklift or skid-steer certification is an advantage.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg) regularly.
Comfortable working in noisy, dusty, and outdoor environments.
Good teamwork and communication skills.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
