About The Carillon
The Carillon is the independent, student-run newspaper at the University of Regina, serving the campus since 1962. As a student-funded publication, it provides a platform for diverse perspectives across news, arts, culture, sports, and opinion. Guided by a Board of Directors and staff, it upholds journalistic standards while offering hands-on experience for students pursuing media and communications.

Position Overview
Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief/Editorial Consultant, the Newspaper Writer produces high-quality content while developing skills in writing, research, and storytelling in a collaborative newsroom.

Responsibilities
Content Creation (60%)

Research and write articles (news, community, opinion)
Pitch relevant story ideas
Ensure accuracy, strong sourcing, and clear writing
Meet deadlines and word counts

Story Development & Engagement (30%)

Identify timely stories on campus and in the community
Engage with students, faculty, and organizations
Attend and report on events


Professional Development (10%)

Participate in training and seek editorial feedback
Support special issues and assigned tasks

Qualifications
Education or experience in journalism or related field
Strong writing, research, and time management skills
Ability to maintain accuracy and journalistic integrity
Collaborative and proactive approach
Prior writing experience is an asset

Eligibility
Ages 15-30 at start of employment
Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person
Legally entitled to work in Canada


Details
Contract: June 1-July 24, 2026 (30 hrs/week, in-office)
Pay: $17/hour, semi-monthly + 3 paid sick days
