Saskatoon Public Schools is currently recruiting qualified Educational Assistants Vision Loss to support students who are blind or have visual impairments. These full-time, part-time, and casual positions focus on providing braille access and individualized support that fosters student independence, communication, and meaningful participation in school life. Formal braille training and experience supporting students with vision loss are required.
Braille Training:
Educational Assistants in this role provide consistent braille and access support across instructional and non-instructional settings. Certified braille training through Unified English Braille (UEB), Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), or Braille Literacy Canada ensures candidates have the skills necessary to prepare accessible materials, reinforce braille literacy, and adapt learning resources under the direction of classroom teachers and specialized staff. Strong braille proficiency is essential to supporting equitable access and student success.
Key Responsibilities:
Educational Assistants Vision Loss work collaboratively with interdisciplinary school teams to support goals outlined in Individualized Program Plans (IPPs). Responsibilities include assisting students with braille use, communication access, personal care, mobility, medical needs, and safety. Educational Assistants promote positive behavior supports, encourage independence, supervise students in a variety of environments.
Successful candidates have training or experience in special education or a related support field, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to meet physical demands associated with supporting students with complex needs. Braille certification is required, and First Aid, CPR, and AED training are considered assets. Candidates must be flexible, compassionate, and committed to inclusive education.
