Description

The incumbent will be expected to provide economic, labour relations, statistical and social policy research, as required, to SGEU staff and membership committees, and to interpret the results of that research and communicate those results as required.

Responsibilities will include:
-conducting research on short and long term projects,
-providing technical analysis and support during campaigns, collective bargaining and organizing activities; developing supporting data and economic arguments to assist negotiating committees,
-reviewing and evaluating changes in legislation affecting the working conditions and employment benefits of members,
-writing and preparing briefs and reports,
-assisting with developing surveys and questionnaires.  

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
-A university degree in the social sciences and a minimum of three years experience in a research position, preferably for a labour organization or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  This experience should include assisting in the planning and implementation of campaigns, labour relations research, and the use of analytical and statistical techniques.
-Knowledge of modern research methodologies sufficient to provide the information required during collective bargaining, campaigns, and assigned projects.
-Knowledge of current trends and issues in the area of pensions and benefits.
-Thorough knowledge of the working structure of both the provincial government and the Canadian trade union movement.
-Thorough knowledge of trade union issues and commitment to trade union philosophy.
