Description

Terms of Employment:
-Seasonal. 30 hours weekly between June 11-Oct 31.
-Scheduling is generally flexible but must be able to work Saturdays 12-4pm

Job Description:
The Sustainable Horticulture Assistant works with the Horticulture Coordinator to ensure we are implementing environmental best practices on our urban farm. They are responsible for daily maintenance of the Garden Patch, including planting, harvesting, mulching, composting, and watering. They may be required to direct on-site volunteers and assist with delivering educational programming, activities, and tours to garden visitors. They will also be responsible for data collection to monitor how our gardening practices affect the gardens overall biological diversity. You work toward a well maintained garden using sustainable best practices; a collaborative and engaged work culture; and an excellent volunteer experience.

Eligibility Criteria:
-Between 18-30 years of age at the start of employment.
-Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, or someone who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
-Not in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.
-Must be able to commit to a full-time job placement.
-Must not have participated in any government-funded youth program within 1 year.
-Unemployed, working part-time, or working in a field that does not utilize your academic qualification.

Duties:
-Assist with garden maintenance including planting, weeding, harvesting, cutting grass, maintaining compost, shoveling gravel or soil, etc.
-Collect data for Garden Patch Biodiversity Plan including maintaining a seasonal species inventory
-Work to implement additional sustainable gardening techniques.
-Organize and maintain project supplies
-Supervise on-site volunteers and assist with special events, as required
-Assist with visitor tours and school groups
-Working outdoors in most weather conditions (rain, heat, cold).
-Able to lift up to 50 lbs
