Global Gathering Place's EAL Club is a program for students from Grades four through eight in the EAL (English as an Additional Language) program at school. This program provides students with access to reference tools, and people who can help them with their homework, classroom assignments and test preparation one time per week at each school. This role is a good fit for an aspiring teacher or youth worker with a background in working with children.
Qualifications:
-At least some post-secondary completed. A combination of education and experience working in a cross-cultural setting will be considered.
Knowledge and Experience
Strong English reading, writing and speaking capabilities.
Comfortable working with students on all subjects and content areas at the elementary and/or middle school level.
Adaptable to helping children using the methods by which they have been taught.
Ability to work independently.
Experience working with diverse populations.
Ability to use a personal computer (Windows style software, mouse, keyboard). Familiarity with Microsoft Office products and Internet skills are helpful.
Duties:
- Prepare, provide and review individual, small group or classroom activities that maximize learning opportunities for immigrant and refugee students.
Work in small groups with the EAL students offering individual support, assisting with each child's unique needs, and introducing activities aimed at improving written and verbal English communications skills.
Respond to queries related to homework assignments.
Model and reinforce literacy skills and good basic study skills.
Maintain a positive relationship and communicate regularly with EAL teachers on students academic needs.
Work closely with volunteers and provide them with direction.
Observe and track students progress and attendance to ensure targets are met.
Responsible for monthly reporting.
