SXRMB Beamline is a medium energy, bending magnet-based beamline for EXAFS and micro analysis of various materials. Beamline optics consist of pre-mono collimating mirror; interchangeable Insb (111) and Si (111) crystals; post mono Toroidal mirror for EXAFS station or KB system for microprobe station. SXRMB is equipped with multiple endstations for different techniques, such as EXAFS (bulk and micro-; vacuum or ambient options) and high energy XPS; and these are all open for general user proposals. This position will be filled by an individual with a clear aptitude for science and instrumentation, and with a desire to participate in an active and exciting scientific program.
Responsibilities:
- Provides user support to general users, beamteam members, fee-for-service clients, and CLS staff. Assists with the following functions:
o Beamline and endstation setup
o Assists with sample preparation and trains users on how to operate beamline
o User support beyond normal working hours in accordance with established CLS procedures
- Assist in the normal operation of the beamline including diagnosing problems and supporting the user program.
- Undertakes preventative maintenance following standard procedures or under the guidance of the supervisor.
- Prepares beamline documentation ensuring designs conform to CLS standards, and other relevant codes, standards, and practices, subject to the review and approval of the supervisor.
- Required to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to provide user support
Qualifications:
- All applicants are expected to have completed, at the minimum, a B.Sc. in a related scientific discipline (engineering or core sciences).
- EXAFS, microprobes, and/or XPS experience is an asset.
- Experience in synchrotron-based research, X-ray based spectroscopy/microscopy and ultra-high vacuum systems will be an asset.
