The Saskatchewan Research Councils (SRC) is seeking a Junior Environmental Field Assistant to join its Environmental Remediation team. This position will participate in Project CLEANS (Cleanup of Abandoned Northern Sites).
Accountabilities
Participate in field activities to support the assessment and remediation of abandoned uranium mines in northern Saskatchewan
Carry out environmental sampling of soil, surface water, ground water and waste rock
Assist with environmental data management, analysis and interpretation
Participate in gamma radiation surveys (training is provided)
Oversee contractor in field work that includes earth moving, test pitting and garbage sweeps
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree or technologist diploma in an environment-related field
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Excel and Word
Experience conducting field work, including environmental sampling, data analysis and interpretation
Skills
Strong understanding of safety program and quality work practices
Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills in a collaborative work environment
Requirements
Remote work in radiation-impacted abandoned mine sites in northern Saskatchewan
Travel for up to two weeks at a time during the field season from May to October
Travel by small aircraft, boat and all-terrain vehicle
Walking in rugged, forested terrain with 20-lb (10-kg) backpack for up to 10 hours per day
Extended work hours, up to 12 hours per day while in the field
Valid drivers licence
