Description

The Horticulture Assistant position at the SFBLC works with the Garden Patch Site Coordinator. They are responsible for assisting with day-to-day maintenance of the Garden Patch, including planting, harvesting, mulching, composting, and watering. The Horticulture Assistant will occasionally be required to direct on-site volunteers and assist with delivering programming, activities, and tours to garden visitors under the supervision of the Education and Engagement Coordinators.

Canada Summer Jobs Eligibility Criteria:
Between 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the start of employment.
Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons who have been granted refugee status in Canada.
Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Job Duties:
Food production tasks at the Garden Patch, including:
   o Manual labor related to sustainable food production such as garden planning, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, composting, mulching, etc.;
   o Collecting accurate records on harvest weight, irrigation levels, and planting.
Site maintenance tasks, including:
   o Ensuring the Garden Patch is well maintained, clean, safe, organized, and welcoming for staff, visitors, and volunteers;
   o Site improvement projects such as spreading bark mulch or building raised beds;
   o Organizing and maintaining project supplies;
   o Ensuring garbage and recycling are properly sorted and disposed of.
Contribute to an empowering and inclusive environment where visitors, volunteers, and coworkers are treated with respect and dignity.
Other duties as required to contribute to the mission of the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre.

Qualifications:
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to work outside in all conditions
Cross-cultural awareness and understanding.
Experience working in garden/farm setting an asset.
Experience working with volunteers an asset.
