Description

The Creating Opportunities Strategy is targeted to individuals with lower incomes and multiple barriers to employment and/or education, and is designed to meet each individual where he or she currently sits on the pre-employment spectrum.

Position Summary:
The Literacy Program is a 15-week program where participants develop and strengthen skills for the classroom by increasing their literacy level in reading, writing, mathematics, computers, as well as their critical thinking and problem solving skills; understanding different types of communication; learning about proper physical and digital document use; working alongside others; improving social skills.  The Literacy Instructor plans and facilitates course material and works directly with program participants on addressing barriers, creating realistic action plans, and increasing literacy skills, while contributing to the smooth day-to-day operation of the program. The Literacy Instructor takes the lead role in the literacy curriculum development and facilitation for the Literacy Program, and collaborates with the Employment Transitions Coach to implement Employment Readiness workshops as well.

What we are looking for:
Someone genuinely interested in working with people who access community services;
Able to engage with participants from diverse backgrounds and varying literacy levels;
Experience working in the community sector  particularly with marginalized populations in culturally diverse settings;
Training and experience in adult literacy programming required; Post-Secondary degree or diploma in Education preferred.
Good computer skills, with particular proficiency in Microsoft Office programs;
Able to take initiative and work in a self-directed way while contributing positively to a team environment;
An energetic, enthusiastic and adaptable individual who has great interpersonal and communication skills.
