Working under the direction of the Chief of Staff, Research Assistants carry out a number of duties to support Members of the Legislative Assembly in their duties representing their constituents. This includes assisting in responding to inquiries from the public, researching varying issues, preparing briefing materials and facilitating meetings with non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders. The Research Assistant must be flexible and able to fulfill multiple roles to support MLAs in their service to members of the public.
The Research Assistant should possess excellent listening skills, a strong work ethic and a commitment to public service. They should have an interest in current events and be a regular consumer of news and media. Patience and maturity in handling a wide range of tasks is also important. Good organizational skills and an understanding of how government processes work is a strong asset. They may be required to travel periodically to assist MLAs in attending meetings and events. It is important that a Research Assistant be able to maintain confidentiality in all matters.
A degree in political studies or a related field (or related experience) is an asset but not a requirement.
