SOFIA House currently has a counselling position available for a knowledgeable, independent team player who is interested in working with women and children in a second stage setting who have experienced interpersonal violence. This position would provide counselling services to residents on alternating weeks over the weekend, and also be responsible for the on-call phone overnights. Responsibilities include providing support to women in a second stage shelter on the evenings and overnight (on call emergency phone) and in office on the weekends, providing information, education, and support to women as needed, attending to crises within the house if needed and connect with the appropriate emergency services as required (Police, Mobile, etc), providing referrals and advocacy to ensure that women have the necessary supports to deal with barriers they face, supporting and counseling women as needed. Must be available to be on call on a scheduled rotation and available for emergencies, ensure that all documentation of casework is provided, ensure on call documentation and statistics are kept, provide updates to weekday staff regarding services provided and maintain a welcome and comfortable environment, including ensuring the building is safe, tidy and clean for residents.
The minimum requirement is a post-secondary degree or certificate in a related field, but an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Ideally the successful candidate will have demonstrated understanding of/experience with working with the complex needs of people experiencing interpersonal violence, including knowledge of addictions, poverty and abuse, Good communication and organizational skills,Crisis intervention skills, and Cultural awareness and respect for women and children of various backgrounds.
