Description

The standard work week for a floor covering installer is 40 hours (8 hours a day, in 5 days a week). As with many careers in construction, there are peak periods that will require you to work overtime. You may have to work occasional nights when renovating offices or other public buildings that are occupied.

As a flooring covering installer, you will work mostly indoors. The job is physically demanding and often involves lifting heavy materials and kneeling for long periods of time.

As with all careers in the construction industry, safety is the top priority. Floor covering installers are trained to work safely and take special precautions to protect themselves from injury.

Installers are responsible for laying floor coverings in establishments such as building, restaurants, home, and offices etc.

Installers may install various materials including laminate, linoleum, vinyl, cork, rubbers, carpet, hardwood or tile.

Duties may include
Inspect and clean surfaces in preparation for material
Measure area to determine amount of materials needed
Confer with sales person or homeowner to determine ideal material and layout
Correct defects such as a sub-floor that is unlevelled or contains rooted wood
Sweep, scrape, sand or chip dirt and irregularities from base surfaces, and fill cracks with proper material
Cut flooring materials
Use proper adhesive to glue material to floor
Clean up leftover material and return to the store
Mop, sweep and vacuum up floors and inspect finished product for flows
Replace defective flooring material
Work with carpenters, other flooring installers, architects, engineers and other workers on job sites
