A Mentor is a responsible adult who primarily are within our Mentored Homes and provide support, encouragement, positive role modeling and day-to-day accountability within the home.
The Mentor primarily is in the home during the late evening and night hours and can sleep. They are responsible to ensure all clients are safe, accounted for and must be available to the client if needed.
Depending on the home, the Mentor may reside at the house at which they work.
Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Branch Manager, or her/his designate, the Mentor will assist in the supervision of the clients in the GVRS program.
Duties:
- Ensure all client in the home are safe and accounted for
- Live in the house with the client and treat the Home as their primary residence
- Build healthy relationships with the client and caseworkers
- Be a healthy, positive role model and contribute to an atmosphere of safety and trust in the home
- Encourage client to share in the household responsibilities associated with managing and maintaining a home
- Promote positive, independent problem solving and decision making skills
Qualifications:
- First Aid and CPR
- Valid drivers license
- Clean Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector check
Knowledge:
- An understanding and commitment to the mission, vision, and core values of the John Howard Society
- Must have working knowledge of the Power-Sharing Model or experience working as a mentor, and/or parenting skills
- Familiarity with individuals involved in the justice system
- Some familiarity with the problems and characteristics of disadvantaged persons
- A working knowledge and experience working in a residential facility for at risk clients
