DESCRIPTION:
This is a part-time position for high school students. Employees provide library services directly to the public and perform a variety of tasks to support that activity. Pages report to the Branch Manager or designate and are expected to refer unusual or difficult problems to their supervisor. Approximately 10 hours a week, more hours possible during summer break. Hours of work will not occur during school hours.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Serve the public by registering patrons, checking materials in and out, shelving books, and interacting with patrons to determine their needs.
Assist patrons with basic reference service and perform routine computer searches and other research as required.
Assist patrons in the use of library equipment.
Enter data, records and text into computers and provide clerical support as assigned.
Process, maintain and shelve library materials.
Assist with the preparation and delivery of library programs as well as other outreach services.
Handle incoming money and issue receipts as required.
Follow library policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Attendance as a full time student at the high school level within the past six months.
Minimum 16 years of age.
Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
Functional literacy skills along with demonstrated oral, written communication skills and computer skills.
Be an active reader who can assist library users in selecting materials to meet their needs;
Demonstrated ability to operate office equipment including computers.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Ability to display judgment and tact in working with the public.
Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Ability to lift up to 20 kg.
Library experience an asset.
Young Workers Readiness Certification an asset.
